From PIRs to the Cloud: 60 Years of Security Evolution

There’s something quietly satisfying about looking back at how far the security industry has come. Not just in terms of technology, but in the way installers have continually adapted to new tools, new challenges and customer expectations, often long before the rest of the world even noticed the shift.
This August marks two major milestones. The intruder alarm turns 60, and Pyronix celebrates 40 years of developing installer-focused security solutions. Together, these anniversaries tell a wider story: one of constant innovation, changing environments, and the installers who have always been at the centre of making security work in the real world.
The 1960
In the 1960s, intruder alarms were relatively simple in concept. Systems relied heavily on magnetic reed switches fitted to doors and windows, which triggered a bell or siren when the circuit was broken.
But while the technology itself was basic, the installation demanded real precision. A loose connection, a slightly misaligned contact or even environmental interference could quickly undermine reliability, and these early systems offered very little tolerance for error.
As a result, performance often came down to installer skill rather than the equipment. Reed switches and basic wiring left little room for mistakes, so alignment, cable routing and solid terminations were essential. Even then, time could introduce new problems. Doors could drop on their hinges, frames could shift with temperature changes, and every day wear might move a contact just enough to cause false alarms or missed activations. The real expertise was in fitting systems that didn't just work on day one, but stayed dependable.
The 1970s
The 1970s introduced Passive Infrared Sensors (PIRs), which brought a major leap forward by allowing systems to detect human movement through heat. It was a breakthrough that moved intruder alarms beyond simple perimeter protection and into internal detection, giving installers more flexibility in how they secured a property.
However, PIRs also introduced new challenges that installers quickly had to learn to manage. Early sensors were sensitive, and false alarms could be triggered by pets, heaters, draughts or even sunlight moving across a room. With panels still limited in zones and programming options, detector placement became as important as the technology itself. Installers had to carefully consider room layout, temperature changes and likely movement patterns, ensuring the system remained dependable without sacrificing coverage.
The 1980s
By the mid-1980s, the industry was shifting towards digital panels and smarter system design. Installations were becoming more complex, and the expectations placed on security systems were rising, particularly as properties themselves became more varied. Extensions, loft conversions, multi-use buildings and increasingly diverse commercial environments meant that installers needed more flexibility than ever before.
It was during this period, in 1986, that Pyronix was founded. From the outset, Pyronix focused on supporting installer expertise by developing solutions designed to make real-world installations more reliable and adaptable. Flexible zone configurations, tamper detection and smarter system design allowed installers to tackle challenging properties without compromise, helping set higher standards for how security systems could perform while remaining practical to install.
Fun fact: In 1987, Pyronix released the world’s smallest PIR of its time, the Enforcer.
The 1990s:
The 1990s brought fully digital panels into the mainstream, introducing event logs, improved peripheral integration and automatic PSTN signalling. These advances significantly expanded what intruder alarm systems could do, but they also added new layers of complexity to installation and commissioning. Installers were no longer just fitting sensors and wiring devices; they were configuring behaviour, programming zones, setting entry and exit delays and managing system outputs to ensure the system worked exactly as intended.
Pyronix panels supported installers through this shift, providing tools that made growing standard system complexity easier to manage, while maintaining the reliability and consistency that customers depended on.
Fun fact: Back in 1995, Pyronix became the first security manufacturer in the world to have its entire product range CE-marked, meeting the strict safety, health, and environmental standards required for sale across the European Economic Area (EEA).
The 2000s:
The arrival of wireless technology in the 2000s marked one of the most significant shifts the industry had seen. Wireless devices made retrofits and system expansions far more practical, allowing installers to add detection and protection without the disruption of extensive cabling. Hybrid systems became increasingly common, giving installers the ability to combine wired reliability with wireless flexibility.
At the same time, wireless introduced new considerations that were just as critical as wiring had been in previous decades. Installers had to account for RF planning, signal range, interference, supervision and building materials that could weaken transmission. Ensuring reliability required a different kind of skillset, and Pyronix responded with innovations such as supervised RF, device auto-learn and anti-jamming features, helping installers deliver dependable wireless installations even in challenging environments.
Fun fact: In 2005, Pyronix were the first manufacturer to introduce blue LEDs into detectors, instead of the traditional red.
The 2010s to Today:
Over the last decade, intruder alarms have become more connected than ever before. Cloud platforms, mobile apps and modern signalling have transformed how customers interact with their systems and how installers maintain them. Remote diagnostics, instant notifications and system health monitoring have helped reduce unnecessary site visits, improve response times and provide greater visibility into system performance.
Yet despite all these advancements, the fundamentals remain the same. The most sophisticated cloud-connected system still relies on careful planning, correct detector placement and an installer’s understanding of the environment. Technology continues to evolve, but the role of the installer remains central to ensuring security systems are reliable, effective and built to last.
Fun fact: In 2011, Pyronix was the first UK security manufacturer to introduce a backlit diffuser on an alarm sounder. This was an industry-leading product innovation that improved visibility and user interaction compared with traditional designs.
Innovation Built Around Installers
Looking back across six decades, the history of intruder alarms is a story of constant progress. From mechanical switches and early PIRs to hybrid panels, wireless expansion and cloud-connected security, each generation of technology has opened new possibilities, while also introducing new challenges that installers have had to master.

As we celebrate 60 years of intruder alarms and 40 years of Pyronix, it’s clear that while the technology will keep moving forward, the heart of the industry will remain the same.
